10 Games that (Probably) Deserved a Sequel & Never Got One

Sometimes, a game comes along and leaves you wondering why it never got a sequel. Whether it was actually fun to play, there was an emotional connection, or even just a bit of nostalgia...

This list could go on and on (foreshadowing that we'll come back for more? maybe...) but here's just 10 of our picks of games that, probably, deserved a sequel. Let us know your thoughts down in the comments.

Bloodborne (2015)

Original platform: PlayStation 4

Not ONLY has it never officially come to PC, it also never got a sequel OR a remaster - but at least we got some DLC in the form of The Old Hunters. The game itself takes place in some blend of gothic-nightmare meets Lovecraft, with plenty of combat to cement it's place as an absolute classic.

Despite plenty of obvious interest from fans, to the point where people emulate it on PC, FromSoftware haven't said we'll be revisited Yharnam any time soon.

If that day comes, they'll easily have us in their grip, and rightfully so, and maybe there's even the slightest glimmer of hope that it'll be announced for PC, too. But perhaps Bloodborne was and will always be a "one and done", who knows...

Days Gone (2019)

Original platforms: PS4 & PC

Gritty, visceral, post-apocalypse, zombies (OK, "freakers"), survival mechanics, and open world. It ticked many boxes for many gamers - and while it DID get a remaster on PS5, a proper sequel it was not. And chances are, we'll never get one.

Minus the interesting choice of name, "freakers", the game really felt full - taking place a couple years after a pandemic, environments easily shift from sprawling natural landscapes, snowcapped mountains, empty cities and factories - it really paints a haunting realism of what-could-be.

Unfortunately, it felt like the odds are stacked against us on this one. The development apparently suffered from some issues, and when it did release, critics gave us a mixed bag - which probably didn't help the case of a follow up.

Star Wars: Republic Commando (2005)

Original platforms: PC, Xbox

OK, yes, we've had PLENTY of Star Wars games - and with the upcoming Mando film we'll probably be getting more. BUT, this was a tactical FPS that follows Delta Squad, who are elite tier clone commandos, fighting within the Galactic Republic.

Whilst expanding on this story feels like an obvious win, given it's now over 20 years old - it'd be a REAL big surprise if we ever got one. So, RIP to Star Wars: Imperial Commando.

The Simpsons: Hit & Run (2003)

Original platforms: PS2, GameCube, Xbox, PC

For those who've been living under a box, The Simpsons: Hit & Run is an absolute cult classic - to the point where people have been remaking or remastering it - with one of the most popular being by reubs remaking it in Unreal Engine 5, and ElGatoDelTejado remastering it. We've even got a Futurama version (or had) thanks to modders.

Think a semi-kid-friendly GTA set in the world of The Simpsons, playing as & meeting various beloved characters, collecting coins, trying to avoid police chases, and uncovering what those cheeky aliens are up to.

Given this genre has somewhat died off, we're probably not getting a sequel - or at least one that remotely feels connected to the original.

Sleeping Dogs (2012)

Original platforms: PC, PS3, Xbox 360

Sleeping Dogs never truly got a sequel, only DLC - although yes, it's a lot of DLC... Alas, Square Enix cancelled plans in early development stages.

It took fast-pace martial arts melee & gunplay, added some unique elements like time-slowing, and blended them together to give us something truly enjoyable. That's not to say it didn't have some faults, like the parkour elements feeling a little rigid - but OK, if we wanted Mirror's Edge, we'd play Mirror's Edge.

With that said, it gave a vibrant and violent portrayal of Hong Kong and a rich story - so, giving us a sequel now and giving us more open-world-ness, well, the only thing I'd need to make it perfect is a pork bun.

Comix Zone (1995)

Original platforms: Sega Mega Drive/Genesis

If you're old enough to have had a Mega Drive or Mega Drive II, chances are you might have played Comix Zone back in the 90s. It was a wild twist on a beat 'em up style side-scroller, taking place in an actual comic, with various weird enemies, speech bubbles, and cheesy super-hero catch phrases. I remember it being absolutely brutal as a kid, and not sure I ever did best it.

It never got a sequel, which is a shame, but it at least got ported and re-released - so we can replay it for a bit of nostalgia.

(Honourable Mentions)

Firewatch (2016)

Original platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch

OK, Firewatch could be seen as an odd suggestion. It's story felt definitive. But it left me wanting more. So, where would a sequel go - the other towers? Delilah? Revisiting Henry? I guess the biggest hold back is - would it have the same charm?

Cuphead (2017)

Original platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox, Switch

The quirky art-style & brutal bosses were truly distinctive and deserving of more, which, I guess we got in the form of DLC - but the devs have stated it's not happening.

L.A. Noire (2011)

Original platforms: PC, PS3, Xbox 360

Love it or hate it, L.A. Noire was undeniably beautiful - using MotionScan for characters giving us a more TV or film like feel, interrogation mechanics, and the grit of 1940s noir with some real-life crime thrown in.

Jet Set Radio (2000)

Original platform: Dreamcast

Iconic console, iconic game. It had style, attitude and a banging soundtrack - plus, the cel-shade style was fun, bright, and in your face. It could be argued that Jet Set Radio Future was a sequel, but it's classed as a reboot or reimagining.

Comments

DESTINY 2 Definitely, cuz it stagnated when Bungie changed the interface to a PORTAL that makes no sense and DROPPING SEASON EXPANSIONS with EPISODES. We got 3 Episodes and are now unplayable so paid for nothing if u couldn\'t get the exotics in time... Next a Star Wars crossover that absolutely takes the Destiny 2 Timeline and Storyline out of context and canon and fluidity... They should have just started clean with Destiny 3!!!
